The group stage has been wrapped up and now it’s time for the good stuff. It’s about to be massive as the knockout phase of the competition gets underway with the Round of 16, running from Saturday 29 June to Tuesday 2 July.
First thing’s first, on Saturday Switzerland will take on Italy at the Olympiastadion in Berlin and later on that evening tournament hosts Germany are going up against Denmark at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund.
Captain of Die Mannschaft, Illkay Gundogan says that the mission for the team is to keep the fans enthusiastic about going far in the competition on home soil. “Our job is to ignite the euphoria,” said Ilkay Gündogan. “Then when we see the enthusiasm of the fans on the streets, or in the stadium, of course it pushes us even more on the pitch.”
Sunday’s opening fixture sees Slovakia take on England, who have been under pressure to deliver a huge title over the years. Despite finishing at the top of Group C, Three Lions star Jude Bellingham has opened up about the negativity that the team has to deal with off the pitch and how to move forward.
"But I think the important thing is, when you're wearing this badge and you're representing those fans, is that you don't give up and I think that they're a constant reminder of that,” he said. Do you think that England can step up to the plate and deliver this time around?
On Monday, tournament favourites Portugal will take on Slovenia in Frankfurt, but before that, France will have a challenge on their hands as they take on Belgium in Dusseldorf. Les Bleus have also come under fire for not performing at the level that was expected in the competition and they have a point to prove. Head coach Didier Deschamps has admitted that the team is not scoring at the rate that they need to if they want to have a fighting chance.
“We need to score more goals, we need to be more clinical, and I am looking for that,” Deschamps told reporters. “We can improve but that's it. We need to hit them where it hurts but we have always had a goal average that is quite impressive, for these three games it hasn't quite been there.” Will France finally find their scoring boots in the knockout stages? Find out with GOtv!
The Round of 16 will conclude on Tuesday with Romania going up against the Netherlands in Munich. And on the same day, the dark horse Austria faces Turkey in Leipzig. The victors of each Round of 16 match will advance to the quarterfinals, which will take place on Friday, 5 July and Saturday, 6 July.
