UEFA Euro 2024 preview, Matchday 2, 19-22 June

The first round of fixtures in the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament were entertaining to say the least, and now it’s time to dive into Matchday 2 of the competition as the stakes begin to get a little higher. Sign up and join GOtv if you haven’t already to avoid missing out further…

The live action begins on Wednesday 19 June as Croatia take on Albania, before Germany goes up against Hungary in Stuttgart. Die Mannschaft had a dream start in their opener as they defeated Scotland 5-1 and captain Illkay Gundogan is keen for international success in his career.

Having won all there is to win on a club level, it’s his chance to lead the Germans to glory on home soil. “It's a huge honour, a huge privilege to be captain. I have experienced an awful lot in my career, lots of great times but also lots of difficult times. I kind of know what it takes to be successful. All I can do is lead from the front, both on and off the pitch. I think the people of Germany – not just the fans – deserve some success,” he says.

Thursday’s key fixture on 20 June will be Spain taking on Italy in Group B. Yamine Lamal is the talk of the town at the moment, especially after breaking the record for being the youngest player to ever feature in the European Championship at 16 years and 338 days old. And of course after the commanding 3-0 victory over Croatia, La Furia Roja will be hoping to continue with the great form in the competition. Head coach Luis de la Fuente maintains that the team needs to keep calm.

"The players know the country is going to be very excited, we're aware of that and of the euphoria,” he said after winning against Croatia. "We just have to stay calm and be professional because staying calm is power."

The headliner for Friday’s encounter comes from Group D as the Netherlands face France. Didier Deschamps has been in charge of the French national team for 12 solid years now and knows the joy of winning but also the agony of defeat. He could also become the first person to win the World Cup and Euros as both a player and a coach, but has stated that’s not his motivation.

“The objective is around the French national team in terms of what we've achieved and what we're capable of achieving. There are other nations who start out aiming to win, as is the case in competitions like the Champions League. Each year seven or eight teams have the objective to win it, and only one team can. It's the same here and it doesn't come down to much,” he says.

Matchday 2 will be wrapped up on Saturday when Georgia face Czech Republic and Turkey face competition favourites Portugal. Belgium will also get the chance to redeem themselves from their opening defeat against Slovakia when they take on Romania.
