First up, Liverpool and Milan will play their Europa League matches against Sparta Prague and Slavia Prague respectively. The Reds’ Alexis Mac Allister is not in any way underestimating their Czech Republic opponents, saying that they expect this one to be a very tough game.
“We know that they are unbeaten at home, top of the league and that tells you that they are a very good team. But we need to focus on ourselves and we’ll have the chance to win this game. That’s what we want,” said the midfielder.
Another hot clash to be served is Bayer Leverkusen taking on Qarabag for the fourth time in the competition. Xabi Alonso’s team has been inspiring this season, and just might be on course to win the Bundesliga title. The cherry on top of the team’s dream run would be a continental adventure that ends with silverware.
Alonso remains Europe’s “most wanted” coach at the moment, with Liverpool in the race for his signature. Jurgen Klopp has heaped praise on the work that the Spanish tactician has done.
“He was a world-class player, like a coach already, and the team he has set up is exceptional. Not only the points tally but the way they play,” said Klopp. Well, if one didn’t know any better, it would seem like Klopp is hinting that he wouldn’t mind Alonso being his replacement.
Elsewhere, Villareal will go up against Olympique Marseille in Spain, Rangers will aim to get the better of Benfica, Sporting CP will face a tough test away to Atalanta, and English clubs West Ham United and Brighton & Hove Albion will host SC Freiburg and Roma, respectively.
In the Conference League, Aston Villa and Fiorentina will look to capitalise on their home advantage when they host Ajax and Maccabi Haifa, respectively.
David James has reportedly backed his former club Aston Villa to be serious contenders for the Conference League, praising head coach Unai Emery in the process.
“I absolutely think the Europa Conference League would be the cherry on the cake for Aston Villa this season,” said James.
"I was at the Europa Conference League Final last year watching West Ham lift that trophy and the West Ham fans were buzzing.”
Enough said. The football in store on Thursday will be quality and you’d be neglecting your football hunger if you opt to sit this one out. The good news is that you don’t have to. Sign up and subscribe for GOtv today and get a piece of the action!
